Old Guard

Howdy,

Just a quick post to showcase another completed Wolf Guard. He's the guy from my avatar and I love the pose, the idea of him swinging that axe makes him look like he's a mean chap!

Once again I finished off the detailing. I liked the gritty look of the shoulder pads so I left them untouched.

Hunters and Guards

Its been a successful week! Firstly 'Hello' to my new followers. 

Ive been ploughing on with 'finishing off' the models that I've already painted, adding more to the detail and edge highlighting them whee they need it. First up I finished off the Wolf Guard Terminator Sergeant. He's from the old school metal box set and now finishes that squad. Most of the back of the model is the wolf pelt that he's carrying!

Next I looked at some of the guys I put together from the Space Wolf Battleforce, this was my first purchase when I got back into the hobby. The detail on the models is great it was a total difference from the old school lead i was used to. The guys I assembled were Grey Hunters, the only squad I was missing from the first time around.

I enjoyed picking out the detail on the models, al the skulls, teeth, runes and pelts make for a great canvas.

After the Grey Hunters I finished off with an old lead Wolf Guard, I love the pose of this model and hope my paint job has done it justice.

Living on the edge

So readily refreshed from bringing the Blood Claws up to date I decided take the brush to some of the other miniatures that were only 'half painted'. First up were two Ultramarines. The medic on the right was the first miniature I ever bought, so I had a fairly nostalgic time finishing him off. Edge highlighting and layering on the metallic parts finish them off well. The snow basing helps to make the blue armour stand out.

From the Ultramarines the next step was to look at some Wolf Guard Terminators, the first of these was a metal lightning claw Terminator. I love the pose of this guy, he looks like he is stomping and ready to claw the life out of something.

From the lightning claw Terminator, next up came most of the old Wolf Guard Terminator box set. Bolters, Chainfists, Flamers and another BFG later and lots of fine detail work with edge highlighting meant I now have the makings of a squad that are visually much better.

Next up is the squad Sergeant, then after that a whole host of other stuff is gradually building up. Problem is I'm now buying things faster than I can paint, anyway till next time.

Finally managed to finish off the two remaining Blood Claws. Meaning that the squad is now complete.  I enjoyed mixing the old metal miniatures with some of the newer plastic arms from the Space Wolves battle force box.

Ive been reading a few blogs lately where the virtues of the latest GW stuff have been praised highly, but i feel that the older models still have a lot of character in them.

Anyway some images to show the progress.

Ive Started ……So I'll Finish!

Its been a while since a post, but what with work and life stuff getting in the way blogging has had to wait. I have been productive none the less!

As I mentioned previously I had an old Blood Claws squad of the metal variety that I began painting when I was much younger. I had dabbled a bit with them after getting a Space Wolves Battle Force, around about the time when I got back into the hobby. They had however remained unloved since then.

The first four were in the worst condition, with a mixture of old and new arms and weaponry they look very rag tag!

The second lot had a bit more paint on them but still weren't where i wanted them to be. Even the stand out Sergeant felt a bit amateur.

The final group was made up of the three Claws that had seen most of the paint action, but were still a bit flimsy in terms of highlighting. Bob the central Claw is famous around these parts with 'Her in Doors' having a bit of a crush on him! Must be that big Hammer!

So began the process of painting a batch of 10 guys in various states of disrepair. I must confess at this point there are still two to go, they will get completed by next week and they are the guys in need of the most work! I paid particular attention to the edge highlighting of everything, completely inspired by the Chaos Knight from Hero Quest in the last post.

I did feel the need for some change at this point and put together some Wolf Guard Terminators from a host of leftover bits and some purchased bodies.

Getting back to the Claws, here is one final shot of a couple more guys completed. Hopefully next post I'll have a full squad on show. I heard that that there is a Storm Eagle that needs filling up!

Dark Angels Veteran Squad Update

Howdy,

I managed to complete the shoulder pads for the Dark Angels Veterans on Sunday. Not a vast amount of painting but it finished them off

 I was really taken with the vibrant highlighting and that started my mind thinking that all of my models from before I started using this technique would benefit from a little edge TLC. So I promptly went and assembled one of my Christmas 'wish list' gifts! A Grey Knights squad was assembled before it was time to watch Sherlock.

The whole idea of edge highlighting some of my existing models really took hold once I messed around   with this Chaos guy. I think he was from the old Hero Quest game.

The next project on the list is to finish off the Blood Claw squad that I started back in 1993. Im looking forward to completing them and seeing the results!

Oh I've also added a few more bits to the blog and adjusted the widths of columns so it doesn't look so clunky!

Dark Angels to see in the New Year

New Year brings fresh impetus to the painting that began just before Christmas. After a couple of Sundays the Dark Angels Veterans now have more paint on them.

This is heavy!

 I took lots of 'in progress' shots during the painting and decided to follow the paint scheme featured in the 'Paint Splatter' section of WD from January 2013. I found the method for painting the cloth left the miniatures looking quite dark so added some ushabti bone highlights

The highlighting with moot green really stands out against the dark tones of the green and adds a good contrast to the cloth

The whole squad with their basing still drying, I thought that a lighter base would help to show off the darker colours in the squad. Pleasingly there were only two guys without helmets to test my skin painting skills. The squad is shoulder pad less as I wanted to add them at the end.

Still lacking shoulder pads but hopefully I should complete them tomorrow! Oh and I forgot to mention I've added a new blog header!
